So you’re wondering if it’s worth buying a PS4 in 2021 or if you should hold out for a difference console.
I was considering buying a PS4 in 2021, so I did some research and wanted to share my findings with you.
Don’t buy a PS4 until you read this article!
Is It Worth Buying a PS4 in 2022?
No. It is not worth buying a new PS4 at full price in 2022 because the much newer PS5 costs about the same, and has many more features, making it a much better choice.
The PS5 is also backward compatible with PS4 games, so you can take your library of PS4 games with you.
Not to mention the PS5 includes a brand-new Dual Sense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

When The PS4 Is Worth Buying:
The only time a PS4 is worth buying in 2022 is if you can find a deal on a second-hand one for $200 or less.
The PS4 is still a solid console and there are plenty of games available for it on the market. It can still run plenty of graphically-intensive games, such as God of War, and many others.
The PS4 controller is great too, and I’ve used one with my PC for many years, but be careful not to buy a fake PS4 controller.
If you can find a good deal on a second-hand PS4, it’s absolutely worth it. It can also be a good backup console.
Having said that, the hardware on the PS4 is too old to justify buying at full price.
I do not recommend buying a new PS4 at full price. Anything over $200 is a no-go. Remember, the PS4 was released in 2013, making it an 8-year-old device.
Can’t Find a PlayStation 5:
While the PS5 is supposed to cost around $500 at launch, it has run into all kinds of supply issues, making it a very rare console.
It officially launched in 2020 almost two years ago and it’s still incredibly hard to come by. The PS5 listings that you find online are often drastically over-priced, often two or even three times the launch price.
What can you do? I would keep an eye on the official Amazon listing for the PS5 and add it to your wish list. When the product is available, you should receive a notification and you can buy one.
Oddly enough, while the PS5 console is elusive, the PS5 Dual Sense controller is in stock, and there are plenty to go around.
You can buy a controller first while you wait for the PS5 to be back in stock.
PS5 Alternative:
If you want a PS5 but you can’t get your hands on one at the moment, I recommend buying a Xbox Series X. It also is having supply issues, but it’s easier to find than the PS5 at official launch price.

There’s a cheaper version called the Xbox Series S that does not include an optical drive, it’s about $100 cheaper.

The Xbox Series X is much more available and delivers about the same performance as the PS5. Not to mention you get plenty of games with Xbox Game Pass.
In fact, the new Xbox Series S costs less than a refurbished PS4 – a console that is 8 years old. Crazy!
You can get some crazy features in the new Xbox consoles too, such as backward compatibility, 120 FPS, SSDS, 4K support, and many others.
The Bottom Line:
While we got a little off-topic there, the bottom line is buying a PS4 in 2022 is not a good idea. It’s only worth buying if you can find a good deal on a second-hand or refurbished model.
Otherwise, if you want to get the most bang for your buck, buy one of the newer consoles, either the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. When you think about it, the new consoles cost about the same as the old PS4, so it’s a no-brainer.
